Relationships

Villagers in Townstead form opinions of each other that go beyond MCA’s hearts. Each villager keeps a one-way view of every person they know: how much they like them, trust them, respect them, feel comfortable around them, are attracted to them, resent them, fear them, and how well they know them. A can trust B while B resents A.

These feelings are separate from bonds. A marriage stays a marriage while affection and trust move up and down inside it.

  • First impressions. Every villager has a stable set of inclinations: kindness, duty, curiosity, and ambition, shaped by their MCA personality. When two villagers first meet, matching or clashing inclinations give a small nudge: kindred kindness, shared curiosity or duty, clashing ambition, a warm presence, or admiration for discipline.
  • Conversations. Each completed conversation adjusts one or more feelings on both sides and leaves each of them a memory: shared a laugh, felt unheard, reconciled after tension.
  • Events. Weddings, arguments, harm witnessed in the street, and other Chronicle events change how people feel about those involved, including when they only heard about it second-hand.

Most of these fade over time. A resentment from months ago counts for less than one from yesterday. Some are permanent.

Townstead reads the numbers back as descriptions, and several can be true at once: a trusted friend, an admired rival, an estranged beloved, an uneasy attachment. Those descriptions shape how the two villagers talk to each other.

When two villagers each like the other well enough and have talked at least four times, they become friends. Friends prefer to sit together at hangouts and talk more warmly, and the Chronicle records the friendship. Once formed, a friendship stays even if the two do not talk for a while.

Villagers and players belong to a townsfolk group with shared stances toward other kinds of people. The default village is friendly to dark elves and hostile to the undead. Root packs can define their own groups and stances.

Your own standing with a villager still uses MCA’s hearts. Reactions such as a villager waving back or applauding you can add a heart, at most once per villager per day.

There is no relationship screen yet. You see relationships through behaviour: who sits with whom, who talks to whom, and what they say. Operators can inspect the numbers with /townstead social inspect <first> <second>.
